Body Autonomy - what is it and why should it matter?
Why I choose body autonomy in my Pilates classes
Body autonomy is about giving you the freedom to make choices about your own body. In Pilates, it means that instead of me telling you exactly what to do all the time, or micro-managing every movement, I guide and encourage you to listen to your body, explore what feels right, and take ownership of your movement. For me, this approach isn’t just a teaching style—it’s a philosophy that shapes the entire atmosphere of my classes. Let me share why it matters so much and why I believe it’s so beneficial.
Fostering self-expression and understanding
When you’re given the space to make choices during movement, you get to discover what works best for you. This creates a safe and supportive environment where you can express yourself, understand your unique body, and trust your instincts. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to Pilates—your body’s needs are just as unique as you are.
Deepening learning and confidence
Autonomy encourages curiosity. Asking, “How does this feel?” or “What happens if I try it this way?” helps you develop a deeper understanding of your movement and your body’s capabilities. Over time, this not only builds confidence in class but can ripple into everyday life, improving how you move and feel.
Creating long-lasting neural pathways
Here’s where it gets fascinating and super exciting! When you make choices and actively engage your brain in movement, you’re reinforcing neural pathways. This is how your brain communicates with your body. By practicing intentional, self-directed movement, those pathways become stronger and more efficient, leading to better coordination and control over time. It’s like giving your mind and body a long-term connection upgrade!
Supporting balance and independence
Studies have shown that Pilates can improve balance and functional independence, especially as we age. When you combine the physical benefits of Pilates with the freedom to explore and adapt movements, you create a practice that supports not only your body but also your sense of independence and confidence.
Why it matters to me
I believe that Pilates should empower, not dictate. Your body is yours, and my goal is to help you feel connected to it, trust it, and learn from it. Body autonomy allows us to make Pilates more than just an exercise—it becomes a tool for self-expression, self-discovery, and long-lasting growth.
Ultimately, by being empowered and coming from a place of excitement and curiosity, you will better be connected via mind and body. This creates the perfect environment for growth and a deeper love for our bodies and what they can do.
